MBCT – Mindfulness based cognitive therapy
MBSR – Mindfulness based stress reduction
Mindfulness techniques are derived from the Buddhist tradition, combining the practice of meditation, breathing and stretching with components of cognitive based therapy.
The practice of Mindfulness focuses the attention in a non-judgemental way, on the here and now. Being present with our sensations, to concentrate and reflect upon our experiences. It also nurtures attitudes contributing to mental and physical wellbeing such as compassion to self an others, acceptance, curiosity and patience.
Mindfulness (MBCT) is used to help the person manage the emotions, changing the relationship with the negative thoughts by using meditation and breathing techniques, and other exercises.
For someone suffering from depression, sadness may trigger a relapse, NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) guidelines recommend Mindfulness (MBCT & MBSR) for relapse prevention of depression.
Mindfulness is also used to support people suffering from the following conditions:
General Anxiety Disorder
Mindfulness Improves well-being, physical health, and enhances the ability to focus.
The programme runs weekly, with groups every Wednesdays for 1.5 hours per session.
Each week a new theme will be introduced and practiced within each session through meditation, breathing and stretching along with CBT exercises. The duration for each theme may range.
Each theme will introduce information on ‘How the mind works?’ and ‘How to challenge negative thinking?’ providing members of the group with coping strategies.
Within the group there is a time for reflection, discussing how practices were experienced and the practice of each theme.
There is a strong emphasis on the freedom to make choices within the programme. Each person attending decides whether they would like to engage in the practice, exercises and discussions. Our Mindfulness programme is about becoming aware of what you think rather than what we do or think.
