Elysium Healthcare pilots ‘Safewards’ model

Nine of Elysium’s sites are piloting the Safewards model, aimed at reducing conflict and containment.

23 staff members from across Elysium’s sites have got together at Chadwick Lodge for a training session on Safewards, which will shortly be piloted across a select few sites with a view to rolling this out across the board if successful.

Representatives from Arbury Court, Ty Grosvenor, Wellesley, The Woodhouse, Chadwick Lodge, Gateway Recovery Centre, Healthlinc House, Potters Bar Clinic and Cefn Carnau joined course leader Geoff Brennan and Chief Nurse Keith Barry for a day of learning and discussion.

What are the aims?

  • Reduce Conflict – patient behaviours that can result in harm
  • Reduce Containment  – methods staff use to control difficulties on the wards

Safewards uses the following interventions to help achieve reduced conflict and containment:

  • Clear Mutual Expectations
  • Soft Words
  • Reassurance
  • Mutual Help Meeting
  • Bad News Mitigation
  • Positive Words
  • Calm Down Methods
  • Discharge Messages
  • Talk Down
  • Know Each Other
