01 Jul Gemma wins Breaking Down Barriers Award at the National Learning Disability and Autism Awards
Elysium Healthcare are delighted to announce that Gemma Clark, Speech and Language Therapist at The Woodhouse, our learning disability and autism service in Cheadle, Staffordshire won the Breaking Down Barriers Award at the National Learning Disability and Autism Awards held in Birmingham on Friday 29th June.
The National Learning Disabilities & Autism Awards celebrate excellence in the support for people with learning disabilities and aim to recognise those individuals or organisations that excel in providing quality care.
The Breaking Down Barriers Award celebrates an individual or organisation who have worked to make sure people with a learning disability get clear information and are able to contribute their views and experiences.
Gemma who is based at The Woodhouse in Cheadle has been working with an individual who has severe autistic spectrum condition and learning disability and is non-verbal. She implemented a travel timeline in line with the timeline he uses in his apartment in order to increase a sense of safety for him and enable him to understand what was happening now and next; this has resulted in helping to reduce the number of incidents taking place. She has also implemented a PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) reward system to help the individual engage with his timetable and gain a sense of achievement.
The judges commented >“Gemma has gone personally above and beyond to identify the needs of everyone. Centering the needs of each person, her innovation has proven successful in eliminating communication struggles and enriching the lives of the people she works with.”
Elysium Healthcare had a total of five finalists at this year’s National Learning Disability and Autism Awards in the following categories; Positive Behaviour Support Award, Breaking Down Barriers Award, Great Autism Practice Award and two for the Support Worker Award.
Congratulations to Gemma on her fantastic achievement and to all of our finalists.
